When we mention classic Ferraris, the 308 GTB often enters the conversation. Among these, the fibreglass version holds a unique position in Ferrari’s history, not only for its beauty and performance but for its uniqueness as a limited-production model. Designed by the legendary Pininfarina, the 308 GTB is often cited as one of the most exquisite Ferraris ever made.
The Ferrari 308 GTB made its debut at the 1975 Paris and London Motor Shows, immediately catching the attention of enthusiasts and critics alike. At first glance, the car was an aesthetic masterpiece, embodying Ferrari's sleek design language of the 1970s, however, the use of fibreglass (often referred to as Vetroresina in Italian) for its bodywork made it truly stand out. This was the first time Ferrari used
fibreglass for a road car, a significant departure from the steel or aluminium that most Ferrari road cars were typically built from. Fibreglass offered a lightweight alternative to steel without compromising structural integrity. With a dry weight of just 1,050 kg, the 308 GTB Vetroresina was notably lighter than its steel successors, contributing to a quicker, more agile driving experience.
On the 14th of October 1975, the Ferrari 308 GTB was simultaneously unveiled at the London and Paris Motor Shows.
On the 14th October 1975, the Ferrari 308 GTB was simultaneously unveiled at the London and Paris Motor Shows. The 308 GTB Vetroresina was produced only from 1975 until mid-1977, after which Ferrari switched to more traditional steel bodywork. During this brief period, only around 800 examples of the fibreglass version were made, making it one of the rarer Ferraris on the market. By comparison, the total production run for all 308 GTB variants stretched into the thousands. This limited production has significantly enhanced the desirability and collectability of the fibreglass model. Enthusiasts and collectors often prize this variant for its rarity, which contributes to its importance in Ferrari's history.
The fibreglass body not only improved the power-to-weight ratio but also contributed to better fuel efficiency compared to heavier models, making the car both exciting to drive and efficient for its time. The 308 GTB Vetroresina was powered by a 2.9-litre V8 engine producing 255 hp, which, coupled with its lightweight construction, allowed it to achieve impressive speed and handling dynamics.
Its design became iconic, blending uncompromising curves with elegant lines that have stood the test of time. The 308 GTB Vetroresina also established a legacy for Ferrari’s mid-engine V8 lineage. It would go on to inspire future models, such as the Ferrari 328, 348, and eventually, the 355, all of which owe a debt to the design and engineering philosophy established by the original 308 GTB.
While Ferrari 308s were generally in the iconic Rosso Corsa (red), a select few were finished in Argento Auteuil (silver) - an uncommon factory colour for the 308 GTB. On the 308 GTB’s sleek Pininfarina-designed body, Argento Auteuil accentuated the car's classic beauty that contrasted with the bolder red or yellow typically seen on Ferraris, further adding to its uniqueness and desirability.
