ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Freida Lock studied in London at the Heatherley School of Art and the Central School of Art, where she met fellow South African artists, Terence McCaw and Gregoire Boonzaier. The trio exhibited with the London Group before returning to South Africa, where they joined with Lippy Lipshitz to form the New Group in Cape Town in 1938.

It is interesting to note that this painting of Harrison Street in Johannesburg – painted just a few years after the establishment of the important New Group – mirrors a scene captured by McCaw. Both dated 1943, the works are painted in styles distinctive to each artist but show slightly different angles of the same scene. Perhaps a record of alliances and relationships in the art world in the early 20th century – one can imagine the two artist friends sitting side by side, painting the vibrant tree-lined Johannesburg street.

COLLECTIONS:

The artist is represented in numerous local and international collections, notably, the Birmingham Museum; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town; University of South Africa, Pretoria and the William Humphreys Art Gallery, Kimberley.

International Collectors Shipping Package

For collectors based outside South Africa who purchase regularly from Aspire Art’s auctions in South Africa, it does not make sense to ship artworks individually or per auction and pay shipping every time you buy another work. Consequently, we have developed a special collectors’ shipping package to assist in reducing shipping costs and the constant demands of logistics arrangements.

For buyers from outside South Africa, we will keep the artworks you have purchased in storage during the year and then ship all the works you have acquired during the year together, so the shipping costs are reduced. At the end of the annual period, we will source various quotes to get you the best price, and ship all your artworks to your desired address at once.

Aspire Art will arrange suitable storage during, and cost-effective shipping at the end, of the annual period.
